SAN DIEGO -- No. 21 San Diego State used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from Santa Clara in a 14-8 win in Golden Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
San Diego State (14-13, 3-3) allowed just two second half goals and outscored Santa Clara (6-19, 1-5) 4-1 in the fourth quarter to move to .500 in GCC play. Claudia Valdes had a five-point day to lead the Aztecs, scoring three goals with two assists. Sydney Gish had two goals and two assists for a four-point day.
Santa Clara was led by Elle Fredrickson with three goals.
The Broncos took and early 2-1 lead and after San Diego State tied it, took another at 3-2. The Aztecs then scored three straight to take a 5-3 lead on a Gish goal with 2:08 left in the first quarter, in which the teams scored a combined 10 goals. The Aztecs would never trail again.
The Broncos cut the lead to just one several times, including at 7-6 on a Kate Rodman goal with 4:12 to play in the first half. The Aztecs would then hold Santa Clara to just two goals the last 20 minutes of the game.
GCC CHAMPIONSHIP
