Aztecs Defeat APU, 11-10, in Thriller

Mimi Stoupas scored four goals, including game-winner, to help San Diego State to GCC win.

SAN DIEGO - No. 24 San Diego State earned a thrilling 11-10 win over visiting Azusa Pacific in Golden Coast Conference action on Friday afternoon in a game that featured eight ties and four lead changes.

Mimi Stoupas scored her fourth and final goal of the game with 5:12 to play to give San Diego State (12-11, 1-1) an 11-9 lead. They would need that goal as Alexandra Akritidou scored her fourth goal of the game to make it 11-10 with 4:53 to play. The defenses would do the rest and APU's (12-9, 1-2) shot in the final seconds went off the post.

Stoupas finished with a five-point game, adding an assist to her total. Rose Kanemy had three points, scoring with two assists. For APU, Kaelene De Bie had two goals and Maria Boiz Pascual had two points with a goal and an assist.

The game was back-and-forth from the start. SDSU took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 only to see APU tie it. Azusa Pacific took a 3-2 lead only to see SDSU take it back at 4-3. The teams would trade goals until APU scored back-to-back goals to take 7-6 lead. Stoupas would tie at 7-7 with 3:53 to play in the third. APU would take the lead more than a minute later, 8-7, on Pascual's goal.

SDSU would then get a much needed cushion. They would score three unanswered to take a 10-8 lead on a Stoupas goal with six minutes to play to set-up the final stretch.
