IRVINE, Calif. — Austin Stewart scored on a five-meter penalty shot in sudden death overtime to lift sixth-ranked Long Beach State to a 10-9 win over 10th-ranked Pepperdine in the third place game of the 2017 Golden Coast Conference Men's Water Polo Championships Sunday afternoon.

In a game that had four lead changes, Pepperdine's Sam Paur tied the game twice to set-up the needed sudden death. Long Beach State finishes 15-12 overall and Pepperdine ends at 18-14.
Paur led the Waves with three goals while Stewart led Long Beach State with three. The game was even across the board as both goalies, Thomas Freeman for Long Beach State and Zack Rhodes for Pepperdine finished with 14 saves.
Marko Asic scored with 53 seconds remaining to give Pepperdine a 7-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter. It was the only time all game a lead was larger than one.
Long Beach State scored three unanswered, including Stewart's goal with 2:49 left to take an 8-7 lead. On the very next possession, Paur scored to tie the game at 8-8.
Neither team could get the winner in regulation, including a five-meter for Long Beach State with 11 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Keegan Wicken gave Long Beach State a 9-8 lead just under a minute into the first overtime period. With 16 seconds left in the frame, Paur tied the game at 9-9.
The second overtime period went scoreless, setting up the game winner in sudden death.
