IRVINE, Calif. — UC Santa Barbara scored the five goals of the game against San Jose State in the fifth place game of the 2017 Golden Coast Conference Men's Water Polo Championships. The first of those came with 12 seconds left in regulation and the other four in overtime as the Gauchos earn an 18-14 win on Saturday evening.

Senior Reed Cotterill scored with 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 14-14 and send it to overtime. From there it was all UCSB. Goals from Boris Jovanovic, Mason Mcquet and two from Max Schaum pushed UCSB to the win.
They finish 11-12 on the year while San Jose State goes 13-15.
Jovanovic and Cotterill combined for nine of the goals for UCSB, with Jovanovic scoring five. Ben Hauschild and Jacob Mercep combined for nine goals, with Hauschild going for five goals for SJSU.
With the game tied at 7-7, San Jose State looked to take control in the third quarter with three straight goals. Two goals form Hauschild and another from Rion Parenteau gave the Spartans a 10-7 lead.
Two straight by UCSB made it 10-9 before San Jose State pushed the lead back to two, 11-9. They traded goals as San Jose State sat on a 12-10 lead with five minutes to play.
The Gauchos then scored two straight, the first by Jovanovic and the game tying goal by Chad Nelson, to make it 12-12 with 2:57 left.
Mercep then answered with back-to-back goals to make it 14-12 with 1:54 to play. Nelson would then core for UCSB with 58 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game and set up Cotterill's tying goal.
