Fast Start Leads Waves Back to Semis

IRVINE, Calif. - Pepperdine scored the game's first four goals and used the fast start to claim an 11-8 win over San Jose State in game two of the 2017 Golden Coast Conference Men's Water Polo Championships on Friday.

The 10th-ranked Waves (18-12) got a hat-trick from Chris Dilworth and two goals each from Marko Asic and Sean Thomas to advance to Saturday's second semifinal against top-seed Pacific at 7:30 p.m.

Jacob Mercep, the GCC leader in goals, led all scorers with four goals. Sophomore goalie Todd Palmer had 13 saves for the 11th-ranked Spartans (13-14).

Leading 2-0, Dilworth scored back-to-back goals for the Waves to make it 4-0 with 4:51 to play in the first quarter. The Waves would hold at least a two goal lead the entire first half and led 7-3 going into halftime.

The lead remained at three heading into the fourth quarter with Pepperdine up 9-6.

From there San Jose State made it interesting.

Bendequz Toth scored just 27 seconds into the final quarter to make it 9-7. The Spartans then drew a penalty on the Waves. They did not score on the five-meter put Mercep picked up the loose ball and scored to make it 9-8.

Dilworth then earned his hat-trick for the key two-goal lead, scoring with 1:16 to play. They would add another in the final seconds for the three-goal win.

The Spartans will face UC Santa Barbara in the fifth place game Saturday at 4:30 pm.
