Fresno State Edges San Diego State in Semifinal Thriller

Bulldogs survive 16-15 classic, advance to sixth straight GCC title game against LMU

FRESNO, Calif.  — No. 12 Fresno State Bulldogs survived one of the most thrilling semifinals in Golden Coast Conference Championship history Saturday, edging No. 16 San Diego State Aztecs 16-15 to advance to its sixth straight title game.

The Bulldogs (15-9) have reached every GCC championship match since 2021 and will face defending champion LMU Lions for the third consecutive season and the fourth time in five years. LMU advanced earlier Saturday with a 12-6 win in the second semifinal. Fresno State had won four straight tournament crowns before LMU snapped the streak last season in Los Angeles.

Noa Markovsky scored the go-ahead goal with 2:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, breaking a 15-all tie and sending the Bulldogs to another championship appearance. Katelyn Mobley made nine saves in the victory.

Fresno State stormed in front 8-3 after the opening quarter, but the Aztecs (18-10) answered with a seven-goal second period to pull within 12-10 at halftime. San Diego State tied the match at 12 in the third quarter and erased another three-goal deficit in the fourth. Mimi Stoupas scored with 4:17 left to even the score at 15 before Markovsky delivered the winner.

Markovsky finished with three goals, while Kira Anderson added three and Ashley Williams scored twice for the Bulldogs.

San Diego State was led by Stoupas and Claudia Valdes with three goals apiece, while Shannon Murphy added three.

The GCC championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m., with Fresno State meeting LMU. San Diego State will face Pacific Tigers in the third-place game at 11 a.m.
