FRESNO, Calif. — No. 16 San Diego State used a five-goal second quarter and held off a late Pacific rally to defeat No. 21 Pacific 12-11 on Sunday in the Golden Coast Conference Championship third-place game at Fresno State Aquatics Center.
The Aztecs (19-10) broke a 3-3 tie after the opening period by outscoring the Tigers 5-2 in the second quarter to take an 8-5 halftime lead. Pacific trimmed the deficit to 10-8 entering the fourth, but San Diego State answered each push down the stretch.
Lucy Bullock scored with 5:23 remaining to give the Aztecs a 12-10 lead before Pacific’s Alicia Petkov converted with 2:47 left for the final margin. San Diego State then held Pacific scoreless the rest of the way.
Bullock finished with two goals for San Diego State, while Sydney Gish, Aiyana Mendoza and Ioanna Petiki also scored twice each. Claudia Valdes added three assists.
Pacific (11-11) was led by Sophie Pethers with three goals. Maria Ikonomou, Millie Jacobson and Petkov each added two goals. Ella Cowan totaled one goal and three assists.
Kyla Pranajaya earned the win in goal for San Diego State with eight saves in 16 minutes of action. Maja Lizy Dulic made 14 saves for Pacific.
