SAN DIEGO — No. 19 San Diego State scored 10 second-half goals to defeat No. 25 Pacific 17-10 in Golden Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex.
The Aztecs (10-7, 3-1 GCC) led 7-6 at halftime and held an 8-7 advantage just over a minute into the third quarter. From there, San Diego State pulled away, outscoring the Tigers 9-3 the rest of the way, including a 4-0 fourth quarter.
Mimi Stoupas led the Aztecs with five goals. Sammi Byers finished with six points on three goals and three assists.
Ella Cowan had three goals and an assist for Pacific (7-6, 1-1), while Alicia Petkov added three goals.
San Diego State took an early lead with three first-period goals, including one from Shannon Murphy. Pacific answered with a goal from Laia Marsinach Ortega, but the Aztecs carried a two-goal lead into the second quarter.
The teams traded goals in the second period, with Stoupas and Poppy Phillips contributing for San Diego State. Pacific stayed within one at halftime, trailing 7-6.
After Pacific cut the deficit to 8-7 early in the third quarter, the Aztecs took control offensively. Stoupas and Byers each scored during the stretch as San Diego State gradually extended its lead.
The Aztecs sealed the win with four goals in the fourth quarter while holding Pacific scoreless.
Kyla Pranajaya made 12 saves in goal for San Diego State. Pacific goalkeeper Maja Lizy Dulic finished with five saves.
