Tigers Roll to GCC Victory

Laia Marsinach Ortega leads No. 25 Pacific to 19-10 win over former team for GCC win.

GLENDORA, Calif. — Junior transfer Laia Marsinach Ortega scored six points against her former team to lead No. 25 Pacific to a 19-10 win over Azusa Pacific in Golden Coast Conference play at the Citrus Aquatic Center.

Marsinach Ortega finished with four goals, two assists and two steals to help the Tigers improve to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play in their league opener.

Lauryn Lucero and Eleni Ikonomou each added five points for Pacific. Lucero recorded four goals and an assist, while Ikonomou contributed two goals and three assists. Sophie Pethers also added three goals as the Tigers used a balanced offensive attack to keep pressure on the Cougars throughout the game.

University of the Pacific built an early lead and stayed in control, outscoring Azusa Pacific University in every quarter. The Tigers led 5-1 after the first period, extended the margin with a 6-3 second quarter, and maintained control with a 5-2 advantage in the third before closing out the match despite a 4-3 Cougars edge in the fourth.

Jaeden Johnson, Kori Cunningham and Jessie Nelson each scored two goals to lead Azusa Pacific (11-6, 0-2).

In goal, Maja Lizy Dulic made five saves for Pacific while Laurel Cooper added one. Azusa Pacific goalkeeper Daniela Herrero Miralles recorded nine saves while facing constant pressure from the Tigers’ offense.
