LOS ANGELES — No. 7 Loyola Marymount defeated No. 10 Fresno State 12-9 in a battle of the Golden Coast Conference’s top-10 programs at Burns Aquatics Center.
The win extended the Lions’ winning streak to six games and marked their 18th consecutive GCC victory. LMU’s last conference loss came to Fresno State in 2023.
Fresno State’s Caitlyn Mossman gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead with 7:47 remaining in the second quarter. LMU’s Emision Styris tied the score at 5-5 with 3:50 to play, sparking a four-goal run to close the first half for the Lions (12-3, 2-0).
The Lions took an 8-5 lead into halftime after Styris scored again with eight seconds remaining, taking control of the game from that point.
Styris finished with six points, scoring four goals with two assists and adding two steals. Goalie Madison Searle allowed just one goal in the second quarter and finished with 11 saves and a steal to anchor the Lions’ defense. Brooke Tora Gil scored three goals, while Chelsea Issac totaled three points with a goal and two assists.
For Fresno State (10-8, 1-1), Hailey Andress and Noa Markovsky scored three goals each to lead the offense. Katelyn Mobley recorded 12 saves and two steals in goal.
In the first quarter, the teams traded goals, with Andress opening the scoring. Tora Gil netted three goals in the period to help Loyola Marymount to a 4-4 tie at the end of the quarter.
Fresno State attempted a comeback in the third quarter, outscoring Loyola Marymount 2-1 behind a pair of goals led by Markovsky. However, the Lions responded in the fourth quarter and maintained control to secure the 12-9 victory.
