STOCKTON, Calif. -- In another back-and-forth classic in the Golden Coast Conference, No. 25 Pacific edged out No. 20 San Diego State, 14-12, at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, Calif., Friday afternoon. The win moves Pacific into a tie for second place in the GCC standings.
Tied at 12-12, Pacific scored back-to-back goals in the final three minutes on tallies from Szamira Koppany and Dora Alaksza to close out the win.
Hila Futorian paced the Tigers (11-8, 4-1) with a seven-point game, scoring three goals with four assists. Alaksza added four goals to help the Tigers tie Fresno State in the GCC standings, one game back of conference leader LMU. Claudia Valdes led the scoring for SDSU (14-11, 3-2) with four goals, while Shannon Murphy added three more.
The game featured 12 ties and five lead changes throughout the four quarters. Neither team held a lead of more than one until the final minutes. The Aztecs held early leads only to see Pacific tie it every time, including at 5-5 with 1:52 left on a goal from Pacific's Alicia Petkov. The Tigers then became the first team in the game to score back-to-back goals as Alaksza gave Pacific their first lead, 6-5, on a penalty shot with 1:09 to play in the first half.
As was the theme of the entire first half, the teams would trade goals in the final minute as Pacific led 7-6 at the break. The theme continued until San Diego State scored back-to-back goals on tallies from Makena Macedo and Valdes to take a 9-8 lead with 55 seconds left in the third quarter.
The teams traded two-goal runs as Pacific retook the lead at 10-9 only to see San Diego State answer to take an 11-10 lead with 6:53 to play on a Mimi Stoupas goal. It wold be the Aztecs final lead.
Pacific's Futorian and Anna Crum scored back-to-back to take a 12-11 lead with 5:54 to play. Just over a minute later, San Diego State's Shannon Murphy scored to tie the game and setup the final minutes for the Tigers' winner.
