SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- No. 20 San Diego State posted a shutout in the second quarter, lifting them to a 14-10 win over Santa Clara in Golden Coast Conference action on Satuday afternoon at Sullivan Aquatic Center.
Megan Holcomb led the charge for SDSU (14-11, 4-2) with three goals, while teammates Lucy Bullock and Claudia Valdes contributed two goals each. Juilanne Stark had four points with two goals and two assists, showcasing the Aztecs' depth in scoring. Other goal scorers for SDSU included Rose Kanemy, Hannah Bell, Luna Sarmiento, Mimi Stoupas, and Delanney Ewing, each adding to the team's total.
Santa Clara (5-14, 0-5) had a strong showing as well, with Kate Rodman scoring three goals and Libby Slater adding two. Other contributors for the Broncos included Megan Chambliss, Avary Torres, Sydney Maccabe, Makenna Genco, and Soph Harvey, who collectively worked hard to keep the game competitive.
The match began evenly, with both teams scoring three goals in the first period. However, SDSU seized control in the second quarter, scoring three unanswered goals while shutting out SCU. The Broncos fought back in the final two periods, but the Aztecs maintained their lead, ultimately sealing the victory.
SDSU goalie Tiaare Ahovelo made six saves, while her teammate Mandy Lagerlof contributed three saves. For Santa Clara, Haley Tassell had an impressive performance with eight saves.
