Lancers Hold Off Cougars in Overtime

Emaly Hutton back-to-back goals in overtime lift California Baptist to 15-13 win over Azusa Pacific.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- In another exciting finish within the Golden Coast Conference, California Baptist's Emaly Hutton scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of overtime to lift the No. 24 Lancers to a 15-13 win over Azusa Pacific on Friday. The win at the Lancer Aquatic Center lifts CBU to a fifth place tie with the Cougars with the tiebreaker in hand for the upcoming GCC Championships (Apr. 25-27).

Trailing by three, 11-8, with 6:23 to play, Azusa Pacific scored three unanswered goals, including Jessie Nelson's with :52 left in regulation to tie the game at 11-11. The teams then traded goals throughout overtime as Nelson's goal 25 seconds into the second overtime frame tied the game at 13-13.

Hutton then netted her first goal of the game to take a 14-13 lead. The Lancers then fought off a five-meter penalty attempt by APU to hold on to the one-goal lead. Hutton then scored her second of the game with :09 left for the final margin.

Hutton led a balanced Lancers (11-13, 2-3) attack with four points, adding two assists to her two goals. Also earning four points on the day were Grace Bergquist with three goals and an assist, Reese Beringer with two goals and two assists, and Kyra Kahahawai with three goals and an assist. Tyanna Schneider had 10 saves in the win.

Nelson led APU (14-12, 2-3) with three goals. Alexandra Akritidou had four points with two goals and two assists. Laia Marsinach Ortega had two goals and an assist.
