Azusa Pacific Edges California Baptist

APU earns fifth place in GCC Championship with 15-14 win on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES - In a nail-biting GCC Championship Fifth-Place Game, Azusa Pacific held on to defeat California Baptist, 15-14, at the Burns Aquatics Center in Los Angeles, CA. The Cougars were led by Laia Marsinach Ortega, who scored six goals with an assist for a seven-point game. 

Azusa Pacific (17-15) started strong, scoring six goals in the first period, establishing an early lead. The offensive effort included multiple goals from both Alexandra Akritidou and Jessie Nelson, who also made critical contributions in the opening quarter. California Baptist (12-16) managed only one goal in the first, struggling to keep up with Azusa's aggressive attack.

The second quarter saw California Baptist stepping up their game, scoring six goals to tie the action. Key players like Celeste Almendariz and Devyn Ruffer found the back of the net, but Laia Marsinach Ortega continued her scoring spree, adding three more goals for Azusa. At halftime, the score was tightly contested, with Azusa leading 11-7.

In the third quarter, both teams maintained their scoring momentum, with Azusa Pacific maintaining their slight lead. Kaelene De Bie's goal was pivotal as it kept the Cougars ahead. However, California Baptist's resilience shone through as they netted three goals of their own, including a crucial goal from Reese Beringer.

The fourth quarter intensified as California Baptist fought hard to close the gap, scoring four goals. Despite their efforts, Azusa Pacific held on, with timely saves from goalkeeper Daniela Herrero Miralles, who recorded seven saves throughout the match. The game ended with a thrilling score of 15-14, securing the Cougars' hard-fought victory.
