LOS ANGELES -- No. 10 Loyola Marymount claimed their second straight Golden Coast Conference Regular Season Championship thanks to a 20-5 win over California Baptist in the reulgar season finale at the Burns Aquatics Center on Thursday.
LMU (17-11, 7-0) has won 16 straight regular season GCC games, having swept conference play the last two seasons to earn back-to-back GCC titles. They are the No. 1 seed in the upcoming
GCC Championship (Apr. 25-27), which will be hosted at LMU. The Lions will play No. 8 seed Santa Clara in the opening round. California Baptist (12-14, 3-4) is the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 San Diego State.
The official bracket and seedings for this year's championships will be announced Friday night following the final GCC game of the season as No. 8 Fresno State and No. 21 Pacific battle for the No. 2 seed.
The Lions set the pace early in the first quarter, scoring seven goals, including a standout performance from Ruth Arino Ruiz, who netted five goals in the game. The league's leader in goals, assists and points finished with a nine-point game, adding four assists. Anna Tarantino had a seven-point game with two goals and five assists.
CBU managed to find the back of the net once in the first quarter through Celeste Almendariz. The second period saw LMU continue to build their lead, adding three more goals, leaving CBU scoreless for the quarter.
Despite being down, the Lancers made a stronger showing in the third quarter, scoring three goals with efforts from Kyra Kahahawai, Devyn Ruffer, and Grace Bergquist. However, LMU maintained their relentless pace, scoring five goals in the same period, further extending their advantage.
The final quarter concluded with the Lions adding five more goals, while CBU managed a single goal from Dora Lehoczky.
