APU Earns 13-8 GCC Win

Laia Marsinach Ortega's five points leads Azusa Pacific to 13-8 win over Concordia

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific Cougars secured a 13-8 victory over the Concordia in a Golden Coast Conference match held at Axelrood Aquatics Center in Claremont, Calif. The Cougars outscored CUI 6-1 in the middle quarters to claim their first GCC win over the season.

Azusa Pacific (13-11, 1-2) had a balanced attack, which saw multiple players contributing to the scoreboard, including Laia Marsinach Ortega with three goals, two assists and five drawn exclusions. In addition to Ortega, Maritza Ochoa and Jessie Nelson each netted three goals for APU.

Sierrah Ferguson led Concordia (3-18, 0-5) with four goals and Jaden Soto had 12 saves for the Golden Eagles. 

Both teams scored a pair of goals in the first quarter and they matched each other for five goals each in the fourth quarter. It was the second and third quarters that were the difference. With the game tied 3-3, APU scored five straight goals to take control. Jessie Nelson scored the fith of that run, making it 8-3 with 3:44 to play in the third quarter. 

It would stay that way headed into the fourth when CUI's Sierrah Ferguson and Emeline Smiley scored back-to-back goals to cut the lead to three, 8-5. They would get no closer as APU would score give goals the final five minutes for the 13-8 win.
