CLAREMONT, Calif. -- No. 20 San Diego State's Mimi Stoupas scored with 1:11 to play to lift the Aztecs to an 12-11 win over Azusa Pacific in Golden Coast Conference play at the Axelrood Aquatics Center in Claremont, CA on Friday afternoon. The match featured a back-and-forth contest with four lead changes.
SDSU's (13-9, 3-0) offense was led by Shannon Murphy, who scored three goals, along with strong performances from Sydney Gish, Hannah Bell, Claudia Valdes, and Mimi Stoupas, each contributing multiple goals to the Aztecs' total. The team displayed a balanced scoring attack, finding the back of the net consistently across all four quarters.
On the other side, APU's (12-11, 0-2) Jessie Nelson and Audrey Dexter each scored three goals, making significant contributions to their team's efforts. The standout defensive play for APU came from goalkeeper Daniela Herrero Miralles, who recorded an impressive 12 saves.
APU jumped out to a 4-1 lead early and led 6-3 after Jessie Nelson scored with 4:05 to play in the second quarter. The Aztecs would close the half with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 6-5 going into the half. The teams would open the half tradiing goals as APU took a 7-6 lead early in the third.
San Diego State scored three straight to take the lead for the first time in the game, 9-7, on a Hannah Bell goal with 1:21 to play. Then it was APU's turn to score three straight. It was Rachel Ahumada's goal with 6:55 to play in regulation that gave APU a 10-9 lead.
The back-and-fourth would continues as Stoupas scored on the next possession to tie the game, 10-10, then Jessie Nelson scored with 4:50 to play to give APU lead back at 11-10.
Just over a minute later, Shannon Murphy tied the game for SDSU, 11-11, setting up Stoupas game winner.
