Lions Open GCC Play With Road Win

LMU earns 27-12 win over APU in first league game of 2025 season.

GLENDORA, Calif -- No. 14 Loyola Marymount delivered a commanding performance against Azusa Pacific, winning the first Golden Coast Conference matchup of the season, 27-12, at Glendora High School in Glednora, Calif. It was LMU's 10th straight win in GCC regular season play after going 7-0 last season to win the 2024 regular season title.

LMU (5-5, 1-0) showed their offensive prowess right from the start, scoring six goals in the first period, led by Carolina Magano and Ruth Arino Ruiz.

Throughout the game, LMU maintained a steady scoring pace, netting eight goals in the second period. Magano and Arino Ruiz both finished with five goals each, showcasing their skills and contributing significantly to the team's success. Arino Ruiz finished with eight points, adding three assists. Magano had seven points, adding two assists. Noa Sasover added four goals.

Azusa Pacific (2-8, 0-1) was led by Kaelene De Bie, who scored four goals, and Alexandra Akritidou, who added two. 

The final two periods saw LMU continue to dominate, outscoring APU 8-5 in the third and 5-2 in the fourth. Sophia DeMattia also had a standout performance with three goals, ensuring LMU's victory was never in doubt.

The Lions last defeat in GCC play during the regular season came on Apr. 1, 2023 to No. 9 Fresno State, 10-7.
