SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Lucy Davis scored with :36 left to break a 7-7 tie and 12th-ranked and No. 3 seed Pacific scored an empty net goal to cap a 9-7 win over 17th-ranked and No. 2 seed LMU in the first semifinal of the 2023 Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Championships on Saturday.
With the win, Pacific (22-7) advances to the GCC title game on Sunday at 1 pm and will face two-time champion Fresno State. It's the first meeting between the two in the title game and the second all-time in the GCC tournament, meeting in the 2018 semifinals (Pacific won, 11-7).
Davis and Hila Futorian had three points each in the defensive effort, scoring two goals with an assist each. LMU (14-15) was led by three points each from Marialena Seletopoulou and Ruth Arino Ruiz.
It was an emotional and close event from start to finish. LMU scored the game's first two goals and led 2-1 after the first period and then led 3-1 let more than two minutes in second quarter when Kelsey Snelgar scored.
Pacific outscored LMU 2-1 in the second quarter, including Davis' goal with :56 left to tie the game at 3-3. It was part of a four-goal run for the Tigers as they scored the first two of the third quarter to take a 5-3 with 4:27 on the clock on a Futorian goal. The teams traded goals and Pacific led 6-4 with 1:33 to play.
LMU would close the third with a goal from Mollie Williams with just :23 left in the quarter. It started a three-goal run for the Lions as they took a 7-6 lead on an Arino Ruiz goal with 3:05 to play.
Pacific would score the final three goals of the game. lyana Zlobinsky tied the game with 2:11 to play to set-up the final seconds.
