Lancers Take Seventh, 12-7

The Hutton sisters combined for eight points to lead California Baptist to 12-7 win over Santa Clara.

Jamie and Emaly Hutton combined for eight points as No. 8 seed California Baptist defeat No. 7 Santa Clara, 12-7, in the seventh place game of the 2023 Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Championships. 

The Lancers (15-19) become the first lower seed to defeat a higher seed in the tournament and in the GCC season. An eight-goal run in the middle quarters lift the Lancers to the win as Jamie Hutton had three goals and an assist, and Emaly Hutton had a goal and three assists.

Santa Clara (10-21) was led by Sydney Maccabe's four goals.

CBU jumped out to a 3-0 lead early and saw Santa Clara march back to tie it at 4-4 with Elle Fredrickson scored to open the second quarter. From there it was all California Baptist for the next 16 minutes. 

The Lancers scored six straight to close out the half, including  Emaly Hutton's goal with just :04 seconds left. The run would continue with the first two goals of the third quarter, giving them as 12-4 lead on Brooklyn Young's goal with just :03 left in the third. 

Santa Clara would score the only three goals of the fourth quarter. In their two games at the GCC tournament, they outscored their opponents 10-0 in the fourth quarter.
