SAN DIEGO, Calif. - For the third straight year, Fresno State finds themselves in the Golden Coast Conference Women's Water Polo Championships title game. The eighth-ranked Bulldogs and top-seed of this year's tournament got there thanks to a 15-11 win over No. 24 and fourth-seeded San Diego State in the second semifinal of the 2023 GCC Championships from the Aztec Aquaplex Saturday afternoon.
Fresno State (17-8) will face third-seed and 12th-ranked Pacific in Sunday's title game at 1 pm. It is the first title game match-up between the two and the second in the tournament. They met in the 2018 semifinals with Pacific winning 11-7.
Jillian Schultz, Isabella Sonkoly, and Daphne Guevremont all had three points for the Bulldogs. Rose Kanemy had four points for the Aztecs (12-18) with two goals and two assists. Paula Nieto Jasny had 10 saves. San Diego State will face LMU in the third place game Sunday at 11 am.
San Diego State took an early 2-1 lead on a Samantha Loughlin goal and five minutes into the opening quarter. From there Frsno State scored seven straight to take an 8-2 lead with 2:52 to play in the first half on a Sonkoly goal. The Aztecs managed to cut the lead to three, 10-7, but would get no closer.
