SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- No. 17 LMU finished the game shooting 15-for-19 (78.9 percent), helping them to a 15-8 win over No. 24 San Diego in Golden Coast Conference play at the Aztec Aquaplex Friday afternoon. The win secures the Lions the No. 2 seed at the upcoming GCC Women's Water Polo Championships next week at the Aquaplex.
Nine different Lions (13-14, 6-1) scored as they finish regular season play. Isabella Barajas led the Lions with four points, scoring three goals with an assist. Marialena Seletopoulou scored three goals and Ruth Arino Ruiz had a three-point day with two goals and an assist.
San DIego State (11-16, 4-3) also wraps up GCC play and will be the No. 4 seed. They finish the regular season on Sunday with the Harper Cup against No. 14 UC San Diego. Claudia Valdes had four points, scoring three with an assist.
The Lions build a 3-0 lead early only to San Diego State tie it at 3-3 with 6:38 to play in the second quarter. LMU then score four unanswered to take the lead for good. Barajas' five-meter penalty shot made it 7-3 with 3:12 left in the first half.
San Diego State cut the lead to 7-5 thanks in part to Valdes' goal with just :01 left in the half. It would be as close as they could get as LMU opened the third quarter with three straight to pull away.
