Fresno State Earns Share of 2023 GCC Title

No. 9 Bulldogs defeat No. 16 LMU, 10-7, to earn at least a share of 2023 GCC regular season title.

No. 8 Fresno State earned a 10-7 win over visiting No. 16 LMU on Saturday in Golden Coast Conference play. With the win, the Bulldogs claim at least a share of their third straight GCC regular season title.

The Bulldogs (14-7, 6-0) have won 10 straight on the season and 21 straight GCC games. They also shored up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming GCC Women's Water Polo Championships in San Diego Apr. 28-30. LMU (11-13, 4-1) remains in second place in the GCC standings. 

Defense and a big final push lifted the Bulldogs to the win. With the game tied 7-7 late in the third, the Bulldogs got three unaswered goals from three different players and goalie Paula Nieto Jasney anchored a stingy defense with 12 saves, a .632 save percentage and two steals.

Hailey Andress led the Bulldogs with three goals while Daphne Guevremont had a five-point day with a goal and four assits. LMU was led by Mollie Williams with four goals.

The game was tight throughout the first three quarters. LMU led 1-0 and 3-2. The Bulldogs would look to take over outscoring LMU 5-1 in the second quarter and taking a 6-3 at the half.

Williams would open the third quarter with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 6-5 with 4:44 to play in the third. Cynthia Rosa answered on a 6-on-5 goal to make it a two-goal edge again, 7-5. 

LMU answered on their next possesion on a Williams goal to cut the lead to 7-6 and then Ruth Arino Ruiz tied it, 7-7, with 3:21 to play.

Andress and Rosa closed the third quarter with back-to-back goals for a 9-7 entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs defense did the rest, posting a shutout in the quarter while Brooke Ochoa added one more insurance goal.
