GLENDORA, Calif. -- Daniela Herrero Miralles grabbed 14 saves while Skylar Ford and Maritza Ochoa combined for nine points to lead Azusa Pacific to a 13-8 home win over Santa Clara in Golden Coast Conference action at Citrus Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
Miralles posted a .636 save percentage and allowed only one goal in both the second and third quarter to help APU (12-7, 1-1) to their first GCC win. Ford scored four goals with an assist for a five-point day. Ochoa had three goals and an assist for a four-point day.
Santa Clara (8-12, 0-3) was led by Chloe Morrison with three goals and goalie Liyara Senadheera had 11 saves.
The Cougars jumped out to a 3-1 lead early and never trailed in the game. APU led 5-3 afgter Ochos scored with 5:17 left in the second quarter. Lauren Baglietto scored for Santa Clara, cutting the lead to 5-4 with 2:33 left in the half.
APU's offense took control from there. They went on a 5-0 run to go up 10-4 just over a minute into the third quarter. It was all the Cougars would need as Miralles made 14 saves on 36 SCU shots. SCU went 0-8 on the 6-on-5 and the teams combined to go just 1-for-19.
