Bulldogs Put Up 18 to Advance

STOCKTON, Calif. - The top-seeded and 11th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs used a 9-1 run to open up a two-goal game, and they never looked back in earning an 18-10 win over No. 4 seed and 17th-ranked California Baptist in the second semifinal for the 2021 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships Friday afternoon.

 

The Bulldogs (11-5), who added the sport. of women's water polo in 2018, advance to their first GCC title game with the win. All told 11 different players scored for Fresno State, including hat-tricks by Callie Woodruff and Daphne Guevremont. The first-team All-GCC selection Guevremont added two assists for five points in the game. Claire Schade led all players with seven points, scoring a goal with six assists. 

Amy Branch led California Baptist (5-11) with four points, scoring a pair of goals with two assists. 

Fresno State built a two-goal lead early, leading 3-1 after Cynthia Rosa scored just three minutes into the game. Throughout the rest of the first quarter the teams traded goals for Fresno State to hold a 6-4 lead after one quarter.

The teams traded goals to start the second quarter and CBU's Maddie Schwegler scored to make it 7-5. From there it was all Fresno State.

The scored the last four goals of the quarter for an 11-5 halftime lead. They stretched it to 13-5 before CBU answered. They then put the game with three more goals to complete the 9-1 run and move into Sunday's championship game. 

Fresno State will take on San Diego State at 12 pm on Saturday. The winner earns the GCC's automatic bid to the 2021 National Collegiate Water Polo Championships.
