Seniors Lead Lancers in Historic Finish

SAN DIEGO - Seniors Hannah Evans (SR/Menifee, CA) and Laura Kocsis (SR/Budapest, Hungary) helped California Baptist cap the most successful season in Lancer history with a 7-5 win over LMU in the third place game of the 2016 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships at Aztec Aquaplex on Sunday afternoon.

The senior duo, the most prolific scorers in school history, combined to score of five of the Lancers goals as they finish the GCC tournament in third place. The Lancers, who finished a program-best 23-11 on the season, came up big on defense, forcing LMU (12-21) into 21 turnovers. Lancer goalie Meghan Rowland (SR/Corona, CA) had eight saves while Jessica Castellano (JR/Yorba Linda, CA) and Rowland had three steals each.

LMU freshman goalie Sky Flores (FR/Commerce, CA) finished her 15th game with at least 10 saves, totaling 13 as she wraps up a solid inaugural season in college water polo with 288 saves. Senior Bridgette Alvarez (SR/Laguna Hills, CA) had two goals for the Lions.

The Lancers built a 5-1 lead thanks to Evans and Kocsis. Evans, who had two goals, scored the final goal of the first half for a 4-1 lead. Then Kocsis, who had three, scored at the 5:28 mark of the second half.

LMU attempted a late rally, getting goals from Caitlin Schafer (JR/Hollister, CA) and Ivana Castro (SR/Commerce, CA) to make it 5-3. The teams traded goals the rest of the way, including just one goal each in the final period. 

Both defenses came through in fighting off the 6-on-5 chances as LMU was just 2-for-14 while CBU was 2-for-10.
