Tigers Advance to Title Game

SAN DIEGO - The second-seeded Pacific Tigers earned a 12-8 win over third-seed California Baptist in the first semifinal at the 2016 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex. With the win, the Tigers advance to their first GCC title game.

Rachel Krieger (SO/Regina, Sask., Canada) had four goals and an assist and goalie Alexis Hollinrake (SO/Redlands, CA) had 12 saves to lead the Tigers (16-16). Seven different players had goals for the Lancers (22-11), including two by GCC Player of the Year Hannah Evans (SR/Menifee, CA), nearly two below her season average.

Ellen Tiedemann (JR/Placerville, CA) gave Pacific a four-goal lead, 6-2, with five minutes to play in the first half. The Tigers would lead 6-3 at the break and would extend the lead back to four on a goal from Krieger. Her goal made it 7-3 with the first possession of the second half.

The Lancers made a spurt in a fast-paced third quarter. The teams combined to score four goals in the final two minutes of the third quarter. The Lancers got goals from Valerie Spezzaferri (SR/Trabuco Canyon, CA) and Jessica Castellano (JR/Yorba Linda, CA) to cut the lead to a pair of goals twice at the end of the quarter (8-6 and 9-7).

Each time the Tigers answered. It happened again to start the fourth quarter as Courtney Menard (SR/Calgary, Alberta Canada) cut the Tigers lead to 10-8 with 7:14 to play.

The Tigers would not give up another goal and added two more for the final margin.

They will face the winner of San DIego State in the GCC Championships game on Sunday at 3 pm. The winner earns the GCC automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
