Cougars Advance With Defense

SAN DIEGO - The start of Day Two at the 2016 Golden Coast Conference Championships saw more defense, as sixth-seeded Azusa Pacific earned a 5-3 victory over seventh-seed Fresno Pacific in game four on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex.

Azusa Pacific (11-21), led by goalie Katie Margot (SR/San Marcos, CA) with nine saves and a steal, held Fresno Pacific (9-17) to just 3-for-24 from the field (12.5 percent) and kept them off the scoreboard on the 6-on-5 opportunity, as FPU went 0-for-7.

It was defensive both ways as the Sunbird's goalie Courtney Hall (JR/Poterville, CA) had 14 saves and a steal. She helped FPU hold the Cougars to just 5-for-28 shooting (17.8 percent), holding them to 3-for-11 on the 6-on-5 attack.

With the game tied at 2-2, APU's Britt Harris (SO/Upland, CA) scored with 58 seconds to play in the first half and then Alba Espinar (SR/Barcelona, Spain) scored to start the second half to give the Cougars the two goal lead with 6:17 to play.

FPU's Alyssa Stevens (SR/Clovis, CA) scored her third goal of the game with 3:30 to play in the third quarter to cut the lead to 4-3. However, APU's defense posted a shutout and Megan Myers (JR/Temecula, CA) scored an insurance goal for the win.

APU advances to the fifth place game to face Santa Clara at 11:30 am on Sunday.
