Spezzaferri Leads Lancers to Semifinals

SAN DIEGO - Third-seeded California Baptist used five goals from senior Valerie Spezzaferri (SR/Trabuco Canyon, CA) to earn a 13-5 win over Azusa Pacific in the opening game of the 2016 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships at San Diego State's Aztec Aquaplex.

The Lancers scored eight second half goals to break open what was a 5-2 halftime lead. Megan Myers (JR/Temecula, CA) led Azusa Pacific with four goals.

Calfiornia Baptist took a 4-1 lead after Spezzaferri scored with 1:42 to play. Myers then answered to cut the lead in half. GCC Player of the Year Hannah Evans (SR/Menifee, CA) scored to close the half for the three-goal lead.

The teams traded goals to open the second half, including Myers scoring again to make it 6-3 with 6:13 to play.

The Lancers then pulled away with five unanswered goals.

They will move on to the semifinals and will play the winner of Pacific in the first semifinal at 1:30 pm.
