LOS ANGELES -- Second-seeded LMU scored three straight goals to erase a fourth quarter deficit to defeat third-seeded Santa Clara, 10-9, in the first semifinal of the 2014 Golden Coast Conference Championships at the Burns Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon. The Lions advance the GCC Championship on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
First-team All-GCC selections Alexandra Honny and Ivana Castro scored three goals each for the Lions (21-12), while Claire Eadington and Elle Surber had three each for Santa Clara (17-12).
Santa Clara's Kaitlin Murphy gave the Broncos an 8-7 lead with 5:35 left in the game just 15 seconds after the Lions had tied it on a Laura Lopez goal.
At that point the Lions took control of the fourth quarter and the game. Lopez would tie the game once again, this time with 4:05 to play. Then with 2:45 to play, Castro scored to make it 9-8 for the Lions. They would tack on a key insurance goal, as Mackenzie Beck scored her second of the game with 1:48 to play.
Santa Clara would cut the lead to one with 27 seconds left on a 6-on-5 goal. However, the Lions will milk the clock.
Santa Clara took an early 2-1 lead to start the game, getting a goal with 20 seconds to go in the opening frame from Surber.
LMU would score three straight to take a 4-2 lead. The teams would trade goals before Santa Clara scored a key goal to close the half as Surber score with just 23 seconds left.
The Broncos would tie the game on yet another Surber goal with 6:18 to play. After Honny scored on a five-meter, the Broncos scored back-to-back goals, including the go ahead goal from Eadington with 2:04 to play to set-up the final thrilling quarter.
