#GCCWATERPOLO – We are in the middle of April and that means we are in the home stretch of the 2024 season with seedings on the line for the upcoming Golden Coast Conference Championship (
Apr. 26-28 at Santa Clara).
Two weeks remain with eight games on the schedule this Friday and Saturday, five of which are conference matchups. LMU sits on top of the standings at 23-2 overall and 5-0 in GCC play, both the best start in program history. Winners of 16 straight, the Lions visit California Baptist (10-15, 2-2) on Saturday. With a win, LMU can clinch a share of their first regular season GCC title. They won tournament titles in 2014 and 2015, the first two years of the GCC.
The Lancers, who are earning votes in this week’s national poll, will have work to do before the showdown with LMU as they host Santa Clara (6-17, 1-3) on Friday. Also, on Friday is No. 8 Fresno State (15-7, 3-1), who is a game and a half behind the Lions, traveling to Azusa Pacific (13-10, 2-2). The Cougars are earning votes in the latest national poll.
Rounding out action on Friday is Concordia (10-17, 0-4) traveling to No. 21 San Diego State (12-13, 1-3) in a make-up game from the postponed contest earlier in the season.
Five games are on the schedule for Saturday, with the other GCC game featuring No. 21 San Diego State hosting Santa Clara. Pacific, who has won four straight and is 14-8 overall and 3-2 in GCC play, sits in third position in the conference standings behind Fresno State. They are off this weekend. There were only five games last Saturday, four were conference battles featuring all eight GCC teams. LMU remained unbeaten with a 12-10 win over San Diego State, while Fresno State kept pace with a 14-7 win at Concordia. Pacific knocked off California Baptist, 14-11, while Azusa Pacific earned a 14-6 road win over Santa Clara.
