2022 WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN FRIDAY

#GCCWaterPolo - The 2022 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships begin on Friday with four first-round match-ups at California Baptist University's Lancer Aquatic Center. The winner of the three-day tournament earns the league's automatic bid to the 2022 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships held May 6-8 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

2022 GCC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tickets to the 2022 Golden Coast Conference Women's Championships to be held at the Lancer Aquatic Center on the campus of California Baptist University Friday, April 22 through Sunday, April 24. Action begins with four first round match-ups on Friday. Game one features #3 seed LMU taking on #6 seed Santa Clara at 10 am, followed by #2 seed Pacific facing #7 Concordia in game two at noon. Game three is at 2 pm and features #4 San Diego State taking on #5 seed Azusa Pacific. The final game of the day will be #1 seed Fresno State taking on #8 seed California Baptist at 4 pm. 

Semifinal Saturday will feature the seventh place game at 10 am, the fifth place game at noon and the two semifinals at 2 and 4 pm. Championship Sunday will have the third place game at 11 am, followed by the championship match-up at 1 pm. All the games will be streamed live and feature live stats. GAME 1 - #3 LMU (14-11) vs. #6 Santa Clara (7-19) - 10 AM

LMU enters the GCC tournament at 14-11 overall and finished GCC play at 5-2 overall to claim the #3 seed. They are ranked 18th in the latest national coaches' poll. Leading the way for the Lions in 2022 were first-team All-GCC selections Marialena Seletopoulou and Mollie Williams. They finished one-two on the team in goals with 50 and 48, respectively. The Lions also placed three as honorable mention selections, with Ruth Arino Ruiz, Madison Davis and Yahan Gerber earning the honor. Both Ruiz and Gerber earned GCC All-Freshmen honors.

Santa Clara enters the tournament at 7-19 overall and 2-5 in conference action. They finished in a three-way tie for fifth place and earned the #6 seed through tiebreakers. Junior Lauren Baglietto was named second-team All-GCC for the Broncos, leading the team with 40 goals and 55 drawn exclusions. Lauren Voss led the team with 32 assists and had a team-high 49 points.

GCC Match-up: On April 2, LMU posted a 13-7 win over host Santa Clara. Mollie Williams scored four goals for the Lions as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead and never trailed. Kate Rodman and Lauren Voss had two goals each for Santa Clara.

1191GAME 2 - #2 Pacific (12-10) vs. #7 Concordia (9-12) - Noon

Pacific enters the GCC tournament winners of five straight, finishing 12-10 overall and 6-1 in GCC play to earn the #2 seed. They are ranked 16th in the latest coaches' poll. Leading the way for the Tigers are first-team All-GCC selections Mariana Duarte and goalie Clara Vulpisi. Duarte led the team with 57 goals and 73 points while Vulpisi has 199 saves to be atop of the GCC leaderboard. Toula Falvey was named second-team All-GCC while Hila Futorian was named GCC All-Freshmen.

Concordia enters the tournament at 9-12 overall and 2-5 in GCC play. They finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in the league standings and earned the #7 seed through the tiebreaker process. Earning second-team All-GCC honors for the Eagles is Madison Ravelo, who led the team with 59 goals and 40 assists, for a total of 99 points, which led the GCC. Joining her as honorable mention is goalie Tatiana Cava, who ranks third in the GCC with 182 saves. 

GCC Match-up: Pacific scored the first three goals in their April 8 GCC contest and never trailed in an 8-5 win at the William Woolett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine. It was a multiple-goal contest for four Tigers. Toula Falvey, Marianna Duarte, Brianna Utas and Emma Myall each had two goals. Clara Vulpisi had six saves and three steals in the net.

San Diego State enters the GCC tournament ranked 20th in the latest national coaches' poll, sitting at 12-15 overall and 4-3 in league play to earn the #4 seed. Leading the way for the Aztecs is first-team All-GCC selection Laurene Padilla. The sophomore is eighth in the GCC with 70 total points, scoring 38 goals with 32 assists. Earning second-team All-GCC honors is freshman Rose Kanemy and claiming honorable mention honors is Karli Canale. Kanemy was also a GCC All-Freshmen selection.

Azusa Pacific finished the regular season at 8-15 overall and 2-5 in league action. They finished in a three-way tie for fifth place and earned the tiebreaker for the #5 seed. Leading the way in 2022 and earning second-team All-GCC honors is Milena Guzmån Ortiz. Playing in her final season, she is fifth in the GCC with 55 goals. Earning honorable mention honors is freshman Kyra Kahahawai, who was also a GCC All-Freshmen selection.

GCC Match-up: Karli Canale scored with 1:20 to play in the second overtime period to put No. 19 San Diego State water polo up 14-13 and the Aztecs would make the score stand up in defeating the Azusa Pacific Cougars in a Golden Coast Conference (GCC) matchup on March 25 at the Aztec Aquaplex. Samantha Loughlin and Sydney Hurst led SDSU with seven shots each and Loughlin and Katie Ratcliff paced the team with three goals apiece. Kyra Kahahawai had three goals and an assist and Montana White had three goals and two assists for APU.

1193Game 4 - #1 Fresno State (16-7) vs. #8 California Baptist (12-16) - 4 PM

Fresno State claimed their second straight GCC regular season title - first outright - with a perfect 7-0 record in GCC play to earn the #1 seed. They enter the tournament on a 13-game winning streak and are 16-7 overall. They have been ranked eighth in the national coaches' poll since week one of the season. They are led by GCC Player of the Year Emily Nicholson and GCC Newcomer of the Year Fanni Muzsnay. Nicholson has been a part of the Bulldogs building into a GCC champion as the senior has done a little everything, including a league-high 94 drawn exclusions. As for the freshman Muzsnay, she is third in the GCC with 58 goals. They both were first-team All-GCC selections. Joining them are second-team All-GCC goalie Paula Nieto Jasny and honorable mention selection Daphne Guevremont. Muzsnay and teammate Brooke Ochoa are GCC All-Freshmen selections.

California Baptist enters the GCC tournament at 12-16 overall and 0-7 in league play, earning the #8 seed. The Lancers are led by senior Kira O'Donell, who made history for CBU women's water polo when she became the first player in program history to earn four All-Golden Coast Conference awards. She was named second-team All-GCC.

GCC Match-up: On April 1, No. 8 Fresno State defeated Cal Baptist 10-4. It was their 10th straight win. Freshman Fanni Muzsnay led the Bulldogs on offense with four goals on nine shots. Additional goal scorers included Sienna Jagielski (2), Emily Nicholson (2), Savannah Fitzgerald (1) and Kelsey McKenney (1). Madison Gerg had 12 saves to lead CBU.
